Marantz Products Now Available in India at The Revolver Club

Introduction to Marantz

Marantz has dominated the CD player and amplifier segment of hi-fi audio for six decades. This dominance was a result of a no-compromise policy laid down right from its ideation. In 1953 Saul Marantz, a classical guitarist, was so dissatisfied with the amplifiers available then, that he decided to make one himself. The amplifiers available in the market couldn’t deliver true sound. Thus his pursuit for sonic fidelity led to the making of the first of the Marantz products. A true audiophile needs to know no more.

Most folks at The Revolver Club had only heard about the amazing Marantz products, and some of them were privileged enough even to have some of the Marantz products at home. Now they are living their life, as they get to always be around some of the best hi-fi audio products of the world all the time. Marantz has been renowned worldwide for manufacturing hi-fi audio Marantz products that deliver an unrivaled quality of audio which emulates the true emotion of the music director or artist. Marantz has been able to do this because of their impartial and pure vision of making high-end audio products by Marantz that helps a listener to hear refined elements of the quality of sound.

Saul Marantz wanted to make products that could enable the listener to feel like they were at the recording studio when the music was created. Such a thought in itself was challenging, and very few who understood how tough it is to achieve. This is because there are so many factors that affect the way we listen to music. For Saul Marantz, music mattered, and therefore his no-compromise policy became a challenge that the engineers took up and crafted some of the best products the hi-fi audio world has encountered.

Marantz: Awards and Accolades

Each of the Marantz products go through expert tests and supervision of world-renowned acousticians. Equipped with the latest technologies and a legacy of knowledge of hi-fi audio passed down for generations, the experts make sure the Marantz products are no less than award-worthy.

This is why, since the inception of the Electronic Imaging and Sound Association (EISA) Awards in 1991, Marantz has managed to bag an award almost every year. In the last five years, Marantz 'hasn't missed winning an EISA award even once. In 2019, Marantz was awarded 'Best Product' in the category of 'Stereo System' for the Marantz product: Marantz ND8006/PM8006.

Even though Marantz and other big audio products manufacturing companies been around since the time of Vinyl, Marantz has managed to grow technologically ahead while keeping firm on its roots of analogue audio, while the other companies just kept investing in the what they thought was complete future - Digital.

With this sheer commitment to quality of music over quantity, Marantz gained the reputation as a company that cared for "what's the best for the audiophiles". This made sure that more than any award that it ever own, Marantz had won the hearts of the people.

This is evident in the fact that so many products of Marantz such as the Model 10B were later(not more than ten years) sold for more than 10-15 times its original price. This was the love and fascination of audiophiles for Marantz products.

Marantz, other than winning hearts of audiophiles of the digital age, has also won numerous awards at the What Hi-fi Global Awards year after year. In 2018 Marantz won two awards at What Hi-fi for its Marantz PM6006 in the category of best stereo amplifiers and the Marantz CD6006 won in the category of best CD Player category.

Marantz has also won awards at a lot of award functions such as the Webby's and Sound+Vision Awards and various others.

The Journey of Marantz and Sister Company Denon

Saul 'Marantz's first project was to install his 1940 Mercury car radio indoors in his house. For doing so, he had to build some additional electronics and after spending four years on this project, he managed to design his first high-quality preamplifier: The Audio Consolette. The genius of the Consolette was that it had settings for the various curves (that divided the market). The word spread, and soon what was his DIY project, became a commercial demand of people around.

Marantz wasted no more time and started his commercial operations from the basement of his Kew Gardens home. He managed to sell more than 400 pieces at $153 each. The demand kept increasing urging Marantz to scale up to a pro commercial level. So in 1954, he launched the Model 1 Preamplifier selling for $150 a piece.

In the next seven years, Marantz managed to release new models back to back, increasing the price of every model leading to the release of Model 10 in 1963. Even though it was an outright success, the pricing had gone wrong. The cost of production of Model 10 was higher than the price at which it was retailing. Even though the model 10B was being sold for 750$ five decades ago, it was still less, and this was evident with the fact that it was being sold for a multiple of that amount even 20 years later.

The Model 10 almost made the company bankrupt, and therefore Superscope took over the company in 1964 and moved the company from New York to California. This brought another huge change. In 1966 Standard radio corp began making Marantz products in Japan. Two years later Saul Marantz retired in 1968.

Marantz later went on to become a company that was sold and owned by many companies, including Philips in 1992. This had more disadvantages for Marantz than advantages. But before things could go south, Ken Ishitawa joined Marantz Europe in 1978 technical coordinator.

In just two years Ken Ishitawa managed to be appointed as the Product Development Manager. He started another man's journey into making Saul Marantz dream come true of creating products that did not compromise on the quality as he always said: "Because music matters."

Ken was so amazing with innovating products that Saul who was then 70 years old, phoned Ishitawa and asked him to innovate something in the domain of Compact Disks (CDs). Ken took his word so seriously that he went on to make KI signature product, the CD-63MkII KI Signature. This arguably became the best CD player ever made by Marantz. Thus Ken started personalizing the products, and this range of products was called KI Signature. These products came with exclusive badging and a signed certificate.

After spending more than 15 years under Superscope, Marantz was taken over by Philips in 1980. By 1992, Philips managed to take over the worldwide operations of Marantz. But in 10 years(2002), Marantz Japan (earlier known as Standard Radio Corp) which was manufacturing Marantz products in Japan for Marantz, acquired the brand and all the overseas sales and subsidiaries. Within just a year Marantz Japan and Denon (another big Hi-fi audio manufacturing brand) merged to form D&M (Denon & Marantz) holdings. Boston Acoustics later joined these two. In 2008, Philips sold the balance stake it had in D&M.

Finally in 2017 Sound United LLC acquired D&M holding. This means a more Hi-fi oriented outlook towards developing and manufacturing of products compared to Philip's ideology of making products for the masses at a consumer level. At Sound United, by the end of 2019, Marantz will be joined by other leading hi-fi audio companies to make a united front against big consumer-centric companies like Sony, Philips and Harman.

Secret to Success - Marantz Ecosystem.

The secret to the success of Marantz is in the fact that the engineers understand that developing a new product is like assembling a sports team. It's not about how good one player of the team plays. It's about how all the players can together deliver the best results in unison. So every product is created considering how well it works with other components rather than just how perfectly can it do its own thing.

The Marantz Eco-System makes Marantz products arguably the best in the world. Every design engineer at Marantz lives and breathes the philosophy of team chemistry at every stage of product development.

This makes sure that when you put an entire stereo system of Marantz products, you can get the best possible output ever. Ken Ishitawa has demonstrated this at various conferences globally. This is what makes sure that Marantz brand and Marantz products stand out from the other audio solutions manufacturers.

Marantz today takes pride in some of their leading products such as the Marantz AV receivers like the Marantz NR1508, Marantz NR1509, and the Marantz NR1609. And the award-winning Marantz PM6006 and its predecessor Marantz PM5005.
