Description

William Dieterle directs this drama based on the short story by Stephen Vincent Benét. In the farmlands of New Hampshire in 1840, struggling farmer Jabez Stone (James Craig) cries out in exasperation that he would sell his soul for some money and a decent crop. To his amazement, Mr. Scratch (Walter Huston) appears and offers seven years of prosperity in exchange for his soul. Believing it to be a joke, Jabez accepts willingly and riches soon come his way. However, when Mr. Scratch returns to collect his debt, Jabez has to call on well-known orator Daniel Webster (Edward Arnold) to lead the fight to save his soul.
