Description
Released in 1970, ‘Band of Gypsys’ is the album that set the base of funk rock. It is also Hendrix’s first live recording without his original band. Instead, it was made in collaboration with Cox and Miles. Their differing musical approaches heavily influenced the work, setting Hendrix astride in a new direction.
While many songs within maintain Hendrix’s guitar in a dominant role, there is no denying that there is a clear R&B and funk influence. As it so happens, the man himself was dissatisfied with the final product. The audience clearly disagreed and it peaked in the Top 10 albums within the USA and UK. In fact, ‘Machine Gun’ from the album is widely regarded as one of Hendrix’s most inspired artistic endeavours till date!
However, being a live album, some feel it was limited by the lack of chemistry between the band members. Even so, there is no denying that ‘Who Knows’ and ‘Machine Gun’ are some of the most powerful songs ever produced.
This album is a must-have for anyone interested in funk rock, or even an ardent follower of the legend that was Jimi Hendrix. It’s true experience can be felt through the Vinyl LPs that are finally available in India at The Revolver Club vinyl record store, Mumbai. So if you haven’t done it already, buy a copy online now!
