Blues is a conversation between the artist and their audience. Sugaray Rayford, one of the genre’s finest, has spent decades perfecting this form of expression. Known for his deep voice and commanding stage presence, Rayford’s music speaks directly to the soul.
Rayford was born in Texas, where he was raised on blues and gospel music. Inspired by legends like B.B. King and Howlin’ Wolf, he started performing in the early ‘90s. His breakthrough came as he gained recognition in the Texas blues scene, eventually leading to a series of acclaimed albums and performances worldwide. Rayford’s accolades include a Grammy Nomination, Blues Music Award nominations and recognition from the International Blues Challenge, cementing his place in blues history.
On March 30th, 2026, after his powerful performance at the Soulful Blues Festival at NCPA, Rayford visited The Revolver Club. It was a chance to reflect on his career and discuss his vision for the future of blues music.
For Rayford, blues is an evolving art form. His band— featuring musicians like Drake Shining, who is completing his 51 glorious years in music, and Derrick Martin, who joined the band at 18— reflects Rayford’s belief in nurturing talent. He trains his members to develop their unique styles while keeping blues fresh and relevant. Juju Davis also brings his energy, contributing to the band’s dynamic sound.
Rayford’s approach stands in contrast to older jazz traditions. He spoke about Buddy Rich and the Disneyland incident, where Rich famously dismissed a band member after a mistake. Rayford believes in second chances, where mistakes become opportunities for growth.
Rayford shared a story about Uncle Earl, a former band member who, at 73, dyed his hair and beard black to hide his age. It’s a reflection of Rayford’s belief that passion for music is timeless.
Rayford views blues as more than entertainment—it’s a spiritual experience. He credits the British Invasion of the ‘60s, when The Beatles and The Rolling Stones embraced blues, for globalising the genre.
Sugaray Rayford continues to carry the torch of blues, ensuring its soul and significance endure for generations to come.
