Tinariwen returns to India in Feb 2026 with India Jazz Project shows in Delhi NCR (Feb 6), Mumbai (Feb 7) and Bengaluru (Feb 8). They last played India in Dec. 2023, including Echoes of Earth in Bengaluru, after releasing their ninth album, Amatssou.

Tinariwen formed in the late 70s/early 80s among Tuareg musicians scattered across borders, shaped by drought, exile and political volatility. In the Saharan south, studios weren’t realistic; even rehearsal space was a luxury. If you’ve only heard the phrase “desert blues,” forget the label for a second and picture the conditions it came from. The story runs through Tamanrasset, a crossroads for Tuareg communities across Mali, Algeria and beyond, which Abdallah Ag Alhousseini calls foundational to how the ishumar style took shape.

The message was inseparable from circumstance: longing, displacement and dignity in Tamasheq, carried by guitars learned and assembled under constraint. Ibrahim Ag Alhabib witnessed his father’s execution during a Tuareg rebellion and grew up across borders; music became continuity when everything kept shifting. Instruments were improvised from scrap, melodies drilled until memory could hold them, and lyrics written to travel without their makers. The result became “desert blues”: slow, cyclical guitar patterns and steady rhythms that feel like motion you can’t rush.

Ishumar, linked to “unemployed,” described young Tuareg pushed into migration and odd jobs after drought and conflict; Tinariwen became a circulating voice, songs as bulletin, solace, memory, warning. A pivotal early moment for Western listeners was Festival in the Desert (2001), where outsiders met the band in a setting that made immediate sense of the sound; their profile widened through recordings, touring and advocates in Europe and the U.S.

In 2012, Tassili won the Grammy for Best World Music Album, but the band has stayed blunt about what recognition doesn’t solve: safety, education and cultural continuity. In a 2023 interview, Abdallah Ag Alhousseini spoke from the foothills of Assekrem near Tamanrasset about why Amatssou is titled “fear,” and about tightening conditions across the Sahara.
