Hero: How Enrique Iglesias Won India's Heart
For many Indians who came of age in the early 2000s, Enrique Iglesias was more than a pop star - he was the voice of their first heartbreak, their first slow dance, the soundtrack to late-night texts; and for many, their first childhood crush!
His songs drifted through dorm corridors, echoed from mall speakers, and sat inside the Music folder on the family computer. They belonged to a generation discovering emotion through English lyrics for the first time.
It was a time when the world arrived in fragments: MTV countdowns, Channel [V] interviews, LimeWire downloads that took hours. English pop had already entered Indian homes, but a Latin artist who could bridge global polish with real feeling was something new.
When “Bailamos” hit in 1999, it proved that a Spanish-rooted song could lead the mainstream. By the time “Hero” and “Escape” followed, Enrique had become part of daily life.
The connection deepened as the decade turned digital. “Addicted”, “Do You Know? (The Ping Pong Song)” and “Somebody’s Me” ruled the mp3 and internet-café era. A decade later, Bailando brought him back into the spotlight, uniting fans across languages and generations as one of YouTube’s first true global hits.
That understanding of feeling runs in his blood. Enrique is the son of Julio Iglesias, one of the best-selling Latin artists in history; and a former Real Madrid Castilla goalkeeper whose football career ended after an unfortunate car crash in 1963. During recovery, Julio learned guitar and turned Spanish pop global. Enrique carried that legacy forward. Where Julio’s music lived in orchestral ballads, Enrique’s found home in radio static and late-night playlists.
Enrique first performed in India in 2004 at Mumbai’s MMRDA Grounds and Bengaluru’s Palace Grounds. In 2012, he returned for a three-city run across Delhi, Pune, and Bengaluru.
Enrique remains highly popular in India, evidenced by the overwhelming demand for his 2025 Mumbai concerts, which led to an extra show being added and both dates (Oct 29 and 30) selling out quickly. During his stay, he plans to visit the Taj Mahal, explore cultural landmarks like the Siddhivinayak Temple and indulge in Indian cuisine!
