Love Is a Long Road' Surges 36,979% On Spotify Following GTA VI Trailer

After a decade of waiting, Rockstar Games finally released the much-anticipated GTA VI trailer earlier this week, sending waves of excitement throughout the gaming community worldwide.
A highlight of the trailer was the choice of soundtrack — Tom Petty’s 1989 hit, “Love Is A Long Road,” from the album Full Moon Fever.
The song, which peaked at No. 7 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart in 1989, has experienced an incredible resurgence in popularity following its inclusion in the game’s trailer.
It was also the B-side on the U.K. single release of “Free Fallin’,” a far more famous song from that album.
As per Spotify, the song has witnessed an 36,979% increase in streams since the trailer’s release. Insane!
However, this isn’t the first time Petty’s music has been used in a GTA game. His song “Runnin’ Down A Dream” was previously featured in GTA: San Andreas.
Fans are already spinning theories out of the Tom Petty song in the trailer.
Some suggest the song hints at a nostalgic storyline, possibly exploring the protagonist’s past love, while others speculate a potential in-game location linked to Petty’s birthplace in Gainesville, Florida.
Apart from the music, fans have spotted a cool detail—a “Petty Forever” sticker on a door. A Reddit user pointed out that the sticker’s colors match the Full Moon Fever album artwork. It’s a subtle addition, but it has interesting discussions among fans about possible connections and hidden details in the game.
The relationship between gaming and music doesn’t end there though.
Spotify, in collaboration with Rockstar Games, has curated a Grand Theft Auto playlist featuring iconic tracks like “Fortunate Son,” “Danger Zone,” “Video Killed The Radio Star,” and “Mississippi Queen.”
These songs, featured in previous GTA titles, showcase the series’ commitment to a well-curated and memorable soundtrack.
The GTA 6 trailer, initially set for a December 5 release, hit screens a day early due to a leak on social media.
Set in the iconic Vice City, the trailer introduces players to protagonists Lucia and Jason, embarking on a Bonnie and Clyde-style narrative in the classic Miami-inspired locale.
