Few musicians have redefined rhythm as a constantly evolving philosophy in the way he has. And I say “evolving” because at 73 he remains restlessly inventive. Many of his stature are content to sit on their laurels. Also he has a sense of humor - and doesn’t take himself too seriously. His deep attachment to his hometown and country make him doubly endearing. All of this puts him squarely amongst the greatest of all time.
For decades, Gurtu has worked beyond categories - building a grammar where sound, texture, and pulse replace the traditional hierarchies of East and West.
His mother, the legendary vocalist Shobha Gurtu, trained him to hear precision inside emotion. Under the guidance of tabla maestro Pandit Shah Abdul Karim, he learned the discipline of practice and the architecture of Tala. The early years gave him command over tradition - and the freedom to move beyond.
Most “World Music” collaborations of the late 20th century were cultural exchanges. Gurtu questioned why percussion had to be accompaniment. By placing the tabla and kick drum in the same orbit, he made rhythm a front-line voice. His half-kneeling posture keeps every surface within reach, making the shift from finger strokes to stick work seamless.
With Oregon in the late 80s, his pulse gave acoustic jazz a new center of gravity. In John McLaughlin’s trio, he showed how Indian rhythmic phrasing could function inside Western improvisation.
Across his solo records like Usfret, Crazy Saints, Spellbound and God Is a Drummer Gurtu refined his vocabulary. His compositions organize rhythm as architecture, arranging space and density rather than chord progression.
His collaborations span continents, yet his method stays consistent: listen deeply, find shared rhythmic logic, and build on it. Albums like African Fantasy and Remembrance trace continuity between traditions through structure and phrasing.
Many contemporary jazz drummers use hybrid setups, finger techniques, and open phrasing that began with him. More importantly, he expanded what rhythm can express - treating time as material to move, stretch, or contract by intent.
