Rasoolan Bai’s story resists the tidy lines of a conventional biography. A contemporary of Siddheswari Devi, she became a fixture on the Lucknow and Allahabad radio circuits, performing Dadra, Poorbi Geet, Hori, Kajri, and Chaiti with equal mastery.
In 1948, Rasoolan Bai stopped performing mujra, married, and withdrew from the courtesan milieu. Listening now to her 1935 recording of “Phool Gendwa Na Maaro”, one hears a voice composed yet restless, contained yet burning. That The Other Song (2009) used her recording to trace the tawaif tradition’s decline only confirms how emblematic her voice became.
In later years, she lamented the erosion of the guru–shishya tradition and the lifelessness of institutional teaching. Despite receiving the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1957, she spent her last years in penury, running a small tea stall near the radio station where she had once performed.
Rasoolan Bai’s voice endures. But her legacy runs deeper: an artist who refused showmanship for sentiment, who moved with—and against—the changing tides of music and society.
