Rasoolan Bai’s story resists the tidy lines of a conventional biography. Born in 1902 in Kachhwa Bazar near Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, she inherited the musical legacy of her mother, Adalat Bai and began training at five. Rather than follow the well-trodden path of khayal, she entered the worlds of tappa and thumri - forms that demand vulnerability, nuance, and emotional immediacy.
Her affiliation with the Benaras tradition defined her artistry. The Purab Ang of thumri—rooted in vernacular expression and lyrics of longing and unfulfilled love—became her terrain, and few before or since have voiced it with such depth. The bol banao style she mastered emphasised the weight of each word, pause, and breath. In an age drawn to technical virtuosity, Rasoolan’s art remained centred on tone, restraint, and feeling.
At her height, she performed in princely courts, salons, and AIR studios, standing among the few women of her time to command such spaces. Her first major performance, in the Dhananjaygarh court, led to invitations from local rajas and established her as a leading voice of the Benaras tradition. A contemporary of Siddheswari Devi, she became a fixture on the Lucknow and Allahabad radio circuits, performing Dadra, Poorbi Geet, Hori, Kajri, and Chaiti with equal mastery.
In 1948, Rasoolan Bai stopped performing mujra, married, and withdrew from the courtesan milieu. Listening now to her 1935 recording of “Phool Gendwa Na Maaro”, one hears a voice composed yet restless, contained yet burning. That The Other Song (2009) used her recording to trace the tawaif tradition’s decline only confirms how emblematic her voice became.
In later years, she lamented the erosion of the guru–shishya tradition and the lifelessness of institutional teaching. Despite receiving the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1957, she spent her last years in penury, running a small tea stall near the radio station where she had once performed.
Rasoolan Bai’s voice endures. But her legacy runs deeper: an artist who refused showmanship for sentiment, who moved with—and against—the changing tides of music and society.
