Description
Andrei Tarkovsky’s Ivan’s Childhood is a haunting Soviet war drama that explores the devastating effects of war through the eyes of a young boy. Based on the short story Ivan by Vladimir Bogomolov, the film follows 12-year-old Ivan (Nikolai Burlyaev), who is orphaned after his family is killed by the Nazis during World War II. He joins a partisan group, using his small stature and agility to gather intelligence behind enemy lines. Concerned for his safety, his commanders try to keep him from harm, but Ivan, determined to avenge his family, insists on taking on increasingly perilous missions—leading to a tragic fate. Marking Tarkovsky’s debut feature, the film showcases his signature poetic visuals and profound storytelling.
