How long it has been since you are a record collector?
I started collecting records in 2008. Back then, I used to get them from abroad whenever I travelled. I like buying good condition records in good condition sleeves/covers. I can't stand the sight of a torn & damaged record cover. Then there was a 6-7 years gap because I had only a handful of records & a very basic setup & I grew tired of listening to those same records again & again. Now, once again, with easier accessibility to new records with Revolver Club, I am back in this hobby.

How large is your vinyl collection?
My collection is very small. I have about 50 records (and growing). Most bought new & in mint condition. I listen to new music on Spotify, Tidal, etc. Stuff I like, I buy on vinyl. Of course, there are albums that are only on vinyl & not on any streaming services.
Which is the most valuable record in your collection?
I love all my records. If I have to choose my favourites/most valuable ones, they would be;

Pearl Jam - Vitalogy
Beck - Sea Change
Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats - Blood Lust
Ryan Adams - self title
REM - Automatic for the People
Neil Young - self title
There are more, but I have already defeated the purpose of this question.

After market 8-braid copper speaker cables, The Chord Company Clearway interconnects. I have recently purchased a Schiit Mani Phono Pre Amp. Waiting for it to be shipped. Besides this analog setup, I also have a Bluesound Node 2 for streaming Tidal Masters in MQA as well as local playback of my HiRes audio files.

Any advice to people that are about to start their collection?
Personally, I buy vinyls of albums that I have heard & liked. I don't have much knowledge about first presses, the future value or collectible status of records, but at the same time I believe that having a collection of music on vinyl is the best way of collecting music. If kept carefully and handled with care, these can last for generations. In addition, when played on a good, well matched setup, they sound beautiful. I have a decent cd collection as well, but it's just not the same.

It pays to have some knowledge about first presses, reissues, digitally remastered issues, etc. but all in all, I would say, go for it. Get some of your favourite albums on vinyl. Worry about all these factors later.
It is also important to educate your children about the value of your collection. How you bought it; Where you bought it from; If there is a back story to each record, there is added value.
Make them aware of the difference in sound quality that analog has to offer.
As for audio setups, start modest if you are on a budget (My first turntable was actually a USB vinyl ripper. I used it for years with my home theatre system before buying a proper turntable). Slowly build your budget & get one component at a time. Soon you'll have a setup you will be proud of owning. Keep updated with new equipment that comes to the market.
