Which is the most valuable record in your collection?
Sentimentally speaking , a Kraftwerk Man Machine HMV record my father bought three decades back is highly cherished by me , although subsequently I’ve obtained an US pressing of the same. Rarity perspective- I own a perfect diamond gatefold of RD Burman’s Shalimar as well as mint Angel of Dada Burman’s Aradhana in the controversial early cover that was retracted. Mint copies of Indian pressings of Dark Side of the Moon and Meddle were also quite expensive to get hold of , as have been Japanese pressings of few albums by Allman Brothers and CCR. However , a UK first pressing of Beatles For Sale in mint condition is my icing in the cake till now.
Tell us about your turntable setup.
My TT is Project Debut Carbon DC , with Ortofon Blue cartridge (which I have recently upgraded from Red ). My phonopre and preamp is a vintage Dynaco Pas3 using four NOS BEL ECC83 tubes , connected to my Discrete Dynamics 120watts/channel power amp. This is connected via DAC interconnects and cables to my Elac Debut B6 speakers. In my digital chain I have a broadcast- quality Denon professional CD player , as well as a Marantz CDP and a vintage Pioneer Japan model from 90s.
Any advice to people that are about to start their collection?
Understand the intricacies of catalog numbers and matrix details , learn how to use discogs before making a high value purchase of a cherished old pressing or even a newer digital reissue. In case of buying older records - learn to check for record conditions and ways of negotiating with dealers.
What genres of music do you like?
Vintage Bollywood, classic rock , prog rock , bebop, mellow jazz , soul , blues , bengali modern , RNT songs mostly
