Born and Raised - John Mayer
Definitely ‘Portrait of a Time’ by Peter Cat Recording Co. It’s the first local band vinyl I own and that means a lot. I love supporting indie bands from my own country.
But besides that, it’s such a classy record. Works wonders during small listening sessions or very relaxed parties. It’s always a pleasant surprise for new listeners.
4. Tell us about your turntable setup.
My record player is an Audio Technica, LP 60, the basic model without Bluetooth. It’s a neat entry level turntable.
I actually use a car amplifier, they’re super affordable and do the trick. The brand I own is Lepai. I think each channel has a 20-watt output which is more than sufficient for my small room. It comes with controllers for treble, bass, and volume.
For speakers, I’ve got the Boss Acoustimass 10 system from 1996, they’re almost as old as I am. My parents let me have them to start with when I picked up my player. While they have great nostalgic value to them, I think it’s time for an upgrade :)
5. Any advice to people that are about to start their collection?
Vinyl is an extensive and expensive habit, but don’t let that scare you.
Work with the budget you have, you’ll eventually work towards your dream set up and collection.
I picked up a record first, it was John Mayer’s ‘Born and Raised’. A video of the designer’s process (https://youtu.be/XdfreJmK9R4) that helped me understand and value how much detail is put into vinyl - the artwork, design, lyric sheets, stickers, and so much.
My collection has helped me understand how varied my taste in music is and also sort out the albums I truly value, from start to finish.
But the culture that comes along with it is the best part - I love record stores, Reddit - r/vinyl and Discogs. Don’t forget to check out listening sessions (at The Revolver Club, Adagio, Smoke House Deli, The Quarter…) in the city, those are great places to start too!
