The Terminology
A few terms that will come up when you start:
The movement, or calibre, is the engine of the watch, made up of springs, gears, and other mechanical parts.
A hand-wound watch is powered by turning the crown yourself, usually once a day. An automatic winds itself through the movement of your wrist, but will stop if left unworn for a day or two.
Power reserve refers to how long the watch will run once fully wound.
Complications are any functions beyond basic timekeeping, such as a date display, chronograph, or second time zone.
Jewels are are synthetic rubies used as bearings inside the movement that reduce friction and help it run smoothly.
