What are your favourite genres?
"Bollywood Ghazal English Classic Rock/Pop (The Beatles (from the '60s), '70s-'80s) Disco"
How did you first get into collecting records?
Been collecting cassettes since I was a child. The hobby resurfaced on a trip to the USA in 2015, where I suddenly realised I should really "buy" music legally. And so, a CD collection began in 2015, and a cassette collection in 2016. A visit to the Shah Music Center in 2019 started my record collection, an analogue-pressing of Jagjit Singh's "The Latest" (1982). Discovered TRC in 2020, got my first record player from them in 2021, and the collection goes on.
What’s your turntable setup like?
Denon DP 29-F Turntable connected to a Panasonic SC-HT460GW-K 4.1 Ch Home Theatre.
What’s your best advice for people starting their vinyl journey?
"A Crosley suitcase turntable isn't bad if you are just starting - and are on a budget, since cheaper, scratched records would play better through its ceramic cartridge than on a more expensive magnetic cartridge system. Although, one should upgrade as soon as they can.
For that, I think the Enthusiast Starter Pack by TRC is great. Got my Denon DP-29F from here, and its running great after 4 years, and two stylus changes.
And if you are starting off with a magnetic cartridge system, be sure to buy records from physical record stores, visually inspecting them and testing them on players that have a magnetic cartridge (because a ceramic cartridge can bypass most scratches, trading off some of the record's fidelity.
Be sure that the tonearm weight isn't too much, or it can scratch your records (over time and with extensive use).
Collect, collect, collect. It's a fun hobby. Don't judge people, don't feel judged. You do you. To each their own."
