What are your favourite genres?
Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Grunge
How did you first get into collecting records?
The Boston debut, Foreigner debut and a few others were my first records when they came out (dating myself) and Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath were early obsessions. As a kid I spent most of my money at the used record store (Rod's used Records)
What’s your turntable setup like?
TEAC tn400bt deck with AT VM95 > Aiyima P3 Tube -OR- Aiyima P3 Pro (sold state) phono preamp > Fosi P4 preamp/stager > Edifier R1700 BT speakers. Also have a few digital playback devices.
What’s your best advice for people starting their vinyl journey?
It all depends on what's important to you: listening or collecting. I myself am more of a listener and I know what I like, so I make my purchases based on that. It's been very satisfying to recover many of the lost vinyls of my youth and there are plenty such vinyls left for me to track down. I think it's good to get advice but take it with a grain of salt - this advice included :) and try to avoid buying in to some of the snobbery out there. If you haven't developed your taste in music yet, you may want to stream a bunch before plonking down your cash - one example for me is Mastodon, whom I had never really heard of until a year ago. Once I streamed their music a few times I was hooked and bought three of their albums that I listen to regularly. Also beware that unless you have tons of disposable income, it's easy to get carried away and cause yourself a cash crunch. One more thing: I am a fan of used records! They often sound terrific, and if you can get an early pressing from the 70s and it's in reasonably good condition it may sound better that most brand-new reissues in spite of a few crackles and pops. Plus, it expands your availability factor - Steve Miller Book of Dreams is my best example - it's in good condition, the album art is iconic and overall it sounds very good - got it for 1800 bucks..lots of sentimental value, I really do think that if I had bought a reissue it would have far less meaning for me. Okay, I'll stop now.
