Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man (1995) is a hypnotic, revisionist Western that follows William Blake (Johnny Depp), an unwitting fugitive in the 19th-century American frontier. Arriving in the desolate company town of Machine for a job that no longer exists, Blake quickly finds himself entangled in a series of deadly encounters. Left wounded and on the run, he is taken in by Nobody (Gary Farmer), a Native American who believes Blake to be the reincarnation of the English poet of the same name. As they journey deeper into the wilderness, Blake’s fate takes on an almost mythical quality. Featuring a haunting score by Neil Young and stunning black-and-white cinematography by Robby Müller, Dead Man remains one of the most unique and poetic films in the Western genre.
