Description
One of the most revered masterpieces of Italian Neo-Realism, Umberto D (1952) is a poignant and deeply humanistic portrait of an elderly man struggling to retain his dignity in post-war Italy. Directed by Vittorio De Sica, the film follows Umberto Domenico Ferrari (Carlo Battisti), a retired civil servant who has been abandoned by society and left to survive on his meager pension. With only his loyal dog, Flike, for companionship, Umberto faces eviction and overwhelming despair. But even in his darkest moments, he finds a reason to carry on. Banned in Italy for years due to its subversive critique of the country's treatment of its elderly, Umberto D remains a powerful cinematic achievement. This Criterion Collection release presents a beautifully restored edition of De Sica’s heartrending classic.
