Rafi sang in English only twice. Those tracks still raise a question: why did the safest voice of Hindi cinema switch languages, and why did the recording later pick up a United Nations rumour?
In the late 1960s, Harindranath Chattopadhyay persuaded him to try English and wrote the lyrics. He coached Rafi line by line, because pronunciation would decide the result. Shankar Jaikishan composed and arranged the music, which kept the sound rooted in the Hindi film world.
The choice that creates tension is simple. The tunes were already famous. “Although We Hail from Different Lands” reused the composition of “Baharon Phool Barsao” from Suraj. “The She I Love” reused the composition of “Hum Kaale Hain Toh Kya Hua” from Gumnaam. Your memory recognises the melody first, then your brain notices the English.
This was not a single detour. Rafi recorded around 7,000 songs, and he moved across many Indian languages such as Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Odia, Assamese, Konkani, Bhojpuri, Sindhi, Magahi and Maithili. He also sang in foreign languages including Persian, Arabic, Sinhala, Mauritian Creole and Dutch. During a Mauritius visit in the late 1960s, he sang two songs in Mauritian Creole. In private work, he sang several songs on Chris Perry’s Konkani album Golden Hits with Lorna Cordeiro.
Rarity then produced the pivot. Posts claimed he sang the English song at the United Nations in 1970. Fact checks find no reliable historical record of a UN performance.
What stays true is more interesting than the rumour. He kept melodies that already carried emotion, then changed language when reach mattered. That choice forced precision, because a language switch exposes every weak syllable and every misplaced stress. The English songs prove the same discipline he used everywhere else: hold the tune steady, shape the words cleanly, and make the meaning land.
