His band— featuring musicians like Drake Shining, who is completing his 51 glorious years in music, and Derrick Martin, who joined the band at 18— reflects Rayford’s belief in nurturing talent. He trains his members to develop their unique styles while keeping blues fresh and relevant. Juju Davis also brings his energy, contributing to the band’s dynamic sound.
Rayford’s approach stands in contrast to older jazz traditions. He spoke about Buddy Rich and the Disneyland incident, where Rich famously dismissed a band member after a mistake. Rayford believes in second chances, where mistakes become opportunities for growth.
Rayford shared a story about Uncle Earl, a former band member who, at 73, dyed his hair and beard black to hide his age. It’s a reflection of Rayford’s belief that passion for music is timeless.
Rayford views blues as more than entertainment—it’s a spiritual experience. He credits the British Invasion of the ‘60s, when The Beatles and The Rolling Stones embraced blues, for globalising the genre.
