Motherjane’s story begins in Kochi in 1996, almost by accident, when drummer John Thomas and bassist Clyde Rozario put a band together for a college festival slot that needed saving.
When people map Indian rock from the south, Bengaluru often becomes the default reference point. Motherjane’s rise out of Kerala shifted that map for many listeners.
Before the band became widely known, they tore through the Kerala college circuit as a cover band. Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, played on makeshift stages and erratic sound systems. Those gigs taught them how to stretch songs, test improvisations, and read a restless crowd.
By 2000, Suraj Mani was in the room, pushing them away from covers and into originals. The early years were pure grind. Deepu Sasidharan has spoken about walking long distances after late night gigs to save up for gear, and Baiju Dharmajan kept homemade pedals together with tape when good equipment was hard to find.
Insane Biography arrived in 2002 and travelled far beyond Kerala. Then Maktub landed in 2008 and rewired the idea of Indian rock for a lot of listeners. Carnatic phrasing and percussion were part of the band’s bloodstream. The chenda sits beside distortion, and songs like Broken, Mindstreet, Fields of Sound, and Soul Corporations carry weight without forcing drama.
The half Kathakali face paint, a visual cue that nodded to Kerala’s classical language, represents a split between the human and the divine.
Recognition followed, including major stages, plus opening slots for acts like Megadeth, Machine Head and Opeth. In 2024, after a 12 year break, Motherjane reunited and returned to the stage with Suraj Mani and Baiju Dharmajan at the front, alongside Deepu Sasidharan, Alan Santosh, and Alloy Francis. The comeback moved quickly into serious festival billing, including Mahindra Independence Rock, and into the promise of new work.
In 2026, Mani describes the upcoming album Dobareh as a phase about second chances, and about the work of knowing the self. Their long shadow is partly musical and partly cultural. They made it easier for heavy Indian bands to sound local without sounding like a gimmick.
