Chi Modu: The Man Behind Hip-Hop's Most Iconic Photos
For anyone familiar with the golden era of 1990s hip-hop, certain images are instantly recognizable: The Notorious B.I.G., commanding and calm with the Twin Towers in the background. Tupac Shakur, arms raised, eyes shut, smoke curling upward. Eazy-E, posed like a king atop his lowrider. These iconic moments, along with countless others, were captured by Chi Modu—a photographer who brought the soul of hip-hop to life through his lens.
Born in Nigeria in 1966 and raised in New Jersey, he developed his passion for photography during college. A gifted storyteller, he combined his education in agribusiness economics with a certificate in photojournalism from the International Center of Photography, ultimately finding his calling in documenting hip-hop culture.
Modu joined The Source magazine in the early 1990s, just as hip-hop was transitioning from a grassroots movement to a global force. For many artists, Modu was the first professional photographer they encountered, and his approach was grounded in trust and collaboration.
“My mission was always to ensure that someone from the hip-hop community was documenting it,” Modu said in an interview. His focus on authenticity gave rise to some of the most defining images of the era, from album covers like Mobb Deep’s The Infamous… to promotional campaigns like Bad Boy Records’ iconic “B.I.G. Mack.”
Chi Modu’s work went beyond traditional photojournalism. In the 2010s, he spearheaded public art projects like the “Uncategorized” billboard series, bringing his hip-hop photography to audiences around the world. This initiative reflected his belief that art should be accessible to everyone, not just confined to galleries.
Modu also retained the rights to his work, ensuring his photographs would remain under his control. Through collaborations with brands and exhibitions, he introduced his iconic images to new generations.
Chi Modu passed away from cancer in 2021, at the age of 54.

I want to give thanks today, not just for the lottery win that changed my life, but for the man God used to guide me, ( Chief Ade ). At a time when I was confused, worried, and almost losing hope, Chief Ade spoke words of wisdom and encouragement into my life. He didn’t only promise me riches, but he reminded me to stay hopeful, to act with faith, and to never give up on myself. When I eventually decided to try the lottery, I did so with a different mindset, one of calmness and belief, not desperation. And with the help of Chief Ade, I won the $18,000,000 dollars. It still feels like a dream. Chief Ade, I am deeply grateful. Your guidance helped me see possibilities again when I could only see problems. This victory is not just mine, it is a testimony of your kindness and the power of wise counsel. Thank you for being a light in my darkest moment, I will never forget what you’ve done for me. With my experience working with Dr Isikolo, i came to the conclusion there are very good and honest people out there who can truly do all they can to fix whatever problems you have even when they are not known to you visibly or see them in person. I lost my marriage for not being able to fully what it means to lead a woman right and accept the fact that they are wired in a way we men can never understand. I had to seek help from Dr Isikolo knowing my wife is a good woman whom i cant loose to anyone else. It was a tough situation for me though and too many things was revealed to me while he was helping me to fix the problems and i got the effect of the result just after 48 hours as he assured me and i have my wife back home to me. I’m a testament that miracles happen. When I turned 18, My grandfather encouraged me to buy a lottery ticket for fun but I wasn’t pleased with the way I kept on playing without winning. I was eager to learn more about how to win the lottery and when I searched the internet I found numerous articles saying how they won the lottery through his spells and I decided to give it a try by contacting Lord Meduza.. I’d love to say that this man is such a sweet soul who got my back all through the process of making me a lottery spell to win the lottery. The numbers he gave me won me the LOTTO 6/49 Gold Ball of a whopping $48,000,000 Million Canadian Dollars. Right now, my family and I are blessed. Thank you LORD MEDUZA for making this win come true for me and my family..
