Chi Modu: The Man Behind Hip-Hop's Most Iconic Photos
For anyone familiar with the golden era of 1990s hip-hop, certain images are instantly recognizable: The Notorious B.I.G., commanding and calm with the Twin Towers in the background. Tupac Shakur, arms raised, eyes shut, smoke curling upward. Eazy-E, posed like a king atop his lowrider. These iconic moments, along with countless others, were captured by Chi Modu—a photographer who brought the soul of hip-hop to life through his lens.
Born in Nigeria in 1966 and raised in New Jersey, he developed his passion for photography during college. A gifted storyteller, he combined his education in agribusiness economics with a certificate in photojournalism from the International Center of Photography, ultimately finding his calling in documenting hip-hop culture.
Modu joined The Source magazine in the early 1990s, just as hip-hop was transitioning from a grassroots movement to a global force. For many artists, Modu was the first professional photographer they encountered, and his approach was grounded in trust and collaboration.
“My mission was always to ensure that someone from the hip-hop community was documenting it,” Modu said in an interview. His focus on authenticity gave rise to some of the most defining images of the era, from album covers like Mobb Deep’s The Infamous… to promotional campaigns like Bad Boy Records’ iconic “B.I.G. Mack.”
Chi Modu’s work went beyond traditional photojournalism. In the 2010s, he spearheaded public art projects like the “Uncategorized” billboard series, bringing his hip-hop photography to audiences around the world. This initiative reflected his belief that art should be accessible to everyone, not just confined to galleries.
Modu also retained the rights to his work, ensuring his photographs would remain under his control. Through collaborations with brands and exhibitions, he introduced his iconic images to new generations.
Chi Modu passed away from cancer in 2021, at the age of 54.

I wish to share my testimony with everyone out here. I have daily 9 to 5 jobs, but while I work I try my luck at playing instant Lotto. On this particular day, I decided to seek help online regarding tips for winning the lottery and I saw many individuals testifying about Meduza spells. I reached out to him and informed him that I needed help to win the lottery and he clarified the process to me stating that after he casts the spell, it will take 48 hours for him to provide me the winning numbers which I accepted. I followed all his instructions, and he provided me with the numbers to enter the Lottery. After the draw the following morning, I received a notification on the Lottery app on my phone indicating that I was the lucky winner of $273 million on the New Jersey Lottery and I’m here to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Meduza. usually don’t comment on these threads but this one hit close.
Short version: hired the dark web ethical hacking and cybersecurity firm CyberH4cks.com paid about $55k USD, never used a single file in court, still worth it.
Longer version: my ex was telling everyone (including the kids) that I cheated, that she was the victim, etc. Meanwhile I had suspicions but nothing concrete.
What made the military grade hackers at CyberH4cks different from local PIs was that they weren’t limited to Instagram screenshots and parking-lot photos. A lot of modern infidelity leaves digital exhaust in places most people never look encrypted comms, burner accounts, stuff that lives off the regular web. we eventually opened a case with them on telegram with cellphone number +1 551 414 8634 (@cyberh4cks)
They explained (in plain English) that some of that intelligence only exists in dark-web forums and data brokers you access via Tor / onion routing. Again they did that part, not me. I never even asked for the raw material. Didn’t want it.
All that mattered was that my ex found out an independent forensic team had already pieced together the timeline. After that? Completely different person. Cooperative. Reasonable. Quiet.
The kids stopped hearing nonsense. Divorce wrapped fast.
That’s what I paid for.

To you reading this, Dr isikolo is very powerful and transparent in helping anyone and everyone. When my wife left with my son, I was unable to make her return home because indeed I didn’t know all that happened was deeper than I knew. Months passed and I kept trying till I contacted Dr Isikolo who fixed the problem and ensured the love and connection between us was restored. Unknown to me a man out there was hypnotizing my wife and manipulating her to ensure she divorces me and forever forgets about me. I loved her too much to see her being ruined by someone else. I am glad I contacted Dr Isikolo and he gave his best services and now, my wife and I are happy together and I pray it remains so forever.
