Amjad Khan’s Commander: A Bombastic Record To Accompany An Action Masterpiece!

The 1980s was a wild and exciting time to be working in the Bollywood film industry!
With a dazzling array of a wide spectrum of films, including but not limited to, Karz, Umrao Jaan, Mr. India and many more, it seemed like everyone in the industry was trying out something new and most of them seemed to be working out fantastically for them.
And out of this creative lava, came one of the most unique and exciting action dramas ever made - Commander.
Not only it was uniquely starring Amjad Khan in his first and also one of the few HERO roles, it had one of the most thrilling action, a nail-biting plot, and a larger than life musical score by the legendary duo Kalyanji–Anandji.
The film also famously features a cameo by Amitabh Bacchan, who was already a superstar at this point and did the part only to help his dear friend Amjad out.
And finally, let’s talk about the iconic soundtrack of this iconic movie!
You can clearly see the genius of Kalyanji–Anandji in the way they arrange the instrument, filling up the whole soundscape yet letting every single instrument breathe, to play out in its full capacity.
The album features many of the big singing talents of the day, including the queen herself, Asha Bhosle, Manhar Udhas - known for his legendary folk influences and the legend himself, Kishore Kumar.
The songs show a wonderful variety from the playful ‘Tu Pappa ka Beta hai’ to the melancholic and introspective ‘Duniya Wale’ parts 1 and 2.
This record really stands the test of time and remains as fresh to this day as it was when first released.
