Dolly Parton (19th January 1946 - 25th August 2026)
“It takes a lot of money to look this cheap.”
Dolly Parton knew how to make a joke out of the image she had created, but she also knew exactly what was behind it. Beneath the wigs, rhinestones and humour was a songwriter who understood the value of her words and a woman determined to make her own way.
Born in 1946, the fourth of twelve children in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, Parton grew up poor, with gospel music at the centre of family life. Her mother, Avie Lee, sang and wrote songs, and Dolly began writing as a child. At 13, she made her Grand Ole Opry debut.
When she joined The Porter Wagoner Show in 1967, women were already shaping country music, but Parton, alongside artists such as Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette, helped expand what women could say and do within it. She replaced Norma Jean and soon became one of the show’s biggest draws. When she left Wagoner in 1974, she wrote “I Will Always Love You” as her farewell.
The song found an extraordinary second life when Whitney Houston recorded it for The Bodyguard in 1992. Houston’s version became a worldwide phenomenon and earned Parton millions in royalties. She used some of that money to buy an office complex in a predominantly Black neighbourhood in Nashville, inspired by Houston and the community she came from. “I thought, ‘This is the perfect place for me to be, considering it was Whitney,’” Parton said. She later called it “the house that Whitney built.”
Her own songs gave women space to speak plainly. “Dumb Blonde” challenged female stereotypes. “Jolene” gave jealousy and vulnerability a voice. “Just Because I’m a Woman” confronted a double standard, while “Coat of Many Colors” turned childhood poverty into dignity. Then came “9 to 5”, an anthem for working women.
She carried that independence beyond music, building Dollywood and establishing the Imagination Library, which has now distributed more than 300 million books to children.
Dolly kept writing and performing into her later years. But perhaps the best way to remember her is in her own words: “Find out who you are and do it on purpose.”
She definitely did.
