MILI’s new single “Elephant” marks a major milestone. It features legendary guitarist Joe Satriani, making her the first artist and composer from India to collaborate with him. The track brings together an international lineup, with Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, James Genus on bass,
and Jeff Babko on piano and keys. At the centre is MILI, who wrote, composed, and performed the song.
“Elephant” is a sci-fi–driven rock track in English. While it draws visual and thematic cues from Kerala’s forests, temple festivals, and the presence of the elephant, the approach is not rooted in regional sound. Instead, these references shape the scale and atmosphere of the track, aligning with Satriani’s expansive guitar work.
MILI is already a familiar voice to Indian listeners. A. R. Rahman gave her an early film break in Raavanan with “Keda Kari,” which led to playback work across languages, including Tamil tracks like “Parakka Seivaai” and “Ippadiye.” She reached a wider Hindi audience with Amit Trivedi’s “Meethi Boliyaan” from Kai Po Che!, earning award nominations and leading to further collaborations, including Coke Studio and live tours.
“Elephant” also connects to her independent work. On Written in the Stars (2017), MILI wrote and composed all ten tracks, collaborating with Colaiuta and Genus, along with Michael Landau and George Whitty. Songs like “Dream Like A Skylark,” “Fooling,” “New Day,” and “Inside Out” were released with videos, establishing the scale and detail of her songwriting.
When she began recording Written in the Stars in Los Angeles, the musicians brought extensive touring and studio experience, including work with artists such as Sting and James Taylor. MILI has described this phase as a turning point, where her compositions were matched with players who could execute them with precision.
With “Elephant,” she returns to that approach—working with established musicians while keeping the focus firmly on her writing. The track holds together through the structure and clarity of her composition.
