Faiz Ahmed Faiz—how do you even begin to describe him? He was that rare poet who made romance sound like revolution, and revolution feel like poetry. For Faiz, these were inseparable, so he blended them effortlessly, verse by verse, creating poetry that feels as powerful today as it did decades ago.
Gulon Mein Rang Bhare:
Originally sung by the legendary Mehdi Hassan, this piece is a plea from Faiz, written in the cold walls of Sindh’s Central Jail, asking the world not to let his spirit fade. Mehdi Hassan’s voice carries that desperation like a secret between friends, but the newer renditions; such as the one sung by Arijit Singh in Haider, brings out different shades of the same emotion.
Aaj Bazaar Mein:
During an escorted trip from jail to a dentist, Faiz found himself surrounded by people who recognized him—the poet who voiced their struggles, daring to speak when others could not. Aaj Bazaar Mein captures the emotion he felt in that moment.
Nayyara Noor’s voice was the first to carry this rallying cry. In contemporary music, Ali Sethi and Shae Gill have given it new life by singing their renditions of this iconic poem.
Mujhse Pehli Si Mohabbat:
This one’s more than a love poem. Faiz takes a step back from romance and says, “Hey, look around. The world’s struggling—our problems are part of something way bigger.” Noor Jahan’s version captures that almost painfully well. When Humera Channa and Nabeel Shaukat sing it, you feel that tug between personal love and the world’s suffering all over again. It’s a reminder that our own loves and heartbreaks, as big as they feel, are part of a much bigger story.
That’s Faiz for you. He wrote about heartbreak, about revolution, and everything in between—and somehow, he makes all of it timeless. That’s why generations keep coming back to his poetry, each finding something new, something relatable, something that makes you feel like his words were written just for you.
