Eric Gales’ headlining act at the Mahindra Blues was killer - adding to a brilliant line up that puts this year clearly amongst its best editions yet.
Eric talked and played to the audience with much feeling. He was at his very best - despite an accident at the airport that left him bed ridden for a couple of days.
He showed a rare respect for the audience by waiting to meet them till it was time to head to the airport. A brilliant second act.
The Memphis guitarist treats the blues like a living language. He can make a single verse feel tender, violent, funny, and very human.
Eric can sound huge, but the real pull is in the detail: bends that arrive a fraction late, vibrato that talks like a voice, and rhythm that stays locked even when the solo is burning.
Gales is left-handed and often plays a right-handed guitar flipped upside down, which rearranges how the strings sit under his fingers. The phrasing comes out sideways in a crazy, brilliant way.
He can go from clean chords to a saturated scream in one phrase, then back - without dragging the band. There’s a bit of Hendrix in the fearlessness, and Memphis soul in the way he lets a note hang.
He was here straight from the Grammys where he had his second individual nomination for the Best Contemporary Blues Album (for Crown in 2022 and A Tribute To LJK in 2026). He was also a contributor to the film Sinners that took home a Grammy in the visual media soundtrack/score categories this year.
The album ‘A Tribute To LJK’ is dedicated to Eric’s late brother, Manuel Gales, better known as Little Jimmy King, a Memphis blues guitarist who died in 2002. Most of the tracklist is built around Little Jimmy King’s songs, with Eric reinterpreting them as a way to keep his brother’s writing and name in circulation.
We were all set to hang at The Revolver Club a day before the show - but couldn’t on account of his accident.
He has promised to be back. Let’s see.
