Gustavo Santolalla Working on Aamir khans Dhobi Ghat

Gustavo Santolalla is a renowned, Oscar winning musician with a niche, entirely his own. While composers like Hans Zimmer and Ravi Basrur make iconic scores that are integral the narrative of the film, Santolalla’s music serve as a great soundtrack. Both to the films they are a part of and the mundane lives most of us lead.

The films that Gustavo is best known for (Brokeback Mountain, Babel,) are exactly that, stories about ordinary people just trying to get through the day. Aamir Khan’s Dhobi Ghat, his Indian debut is no different. The interwoven lives of Munna, Yasmin, Shai and Arun in Mumbai are told beautifully by Santolalla’s rich yet minimal, acoustic guitar driven music.

His work is almost universal in that sense, blending itself to any story and setting that it needs to. Ultimately conveying that the human experience is the same no matter where you are. Whether you are Arun a world renowned painter, Yasmin, a privileged south Delhi girl or Munna, a small-time dhobiwala (washerman) we are all the same. Gustavo in that sense is truly one of a kind.
