Jhankaar Beats: The Offbeat Comedy Classic That Paved The Way For Today's OTT Content

Rahul Bose has always been the face of Indian independent cinema in English. While most of the films that he worked with have a cult underground following, there is one that has struck o chord with the masses.
Released in 2003, Jhankaar Beats was the directorial debut of Sujoy Ghosh (who later went on to make Kahaani with Vidya Balan) and starred Shayan Munshi, Sanjay Suri, Rinke Khanna Riya Sen, and of course Rahul Bose.
Even though the film takes a lot of inspiration from the then-recently released Dil Chahta Hai, the playful, cheeky, somewhat adult comedy combined with the motif of RD Burman’s music gives the film its own unique identity.
All the songs were composed by Vishal–Shekhar and the lyrics for this film were by penned by Vishal Dadlani. The soundtrack of the film features songs "Tu Aashiqui Hai", And "Suno Na" sung by playback singer KK and Shaan respectively went on to become huge hits.
There was truly nothing at the time. It was independent cinema, yet had the soul of Bollywood, underneath all those silly adult jokes there was a film with a warm heart that celebrated love, family, and friendship, reminiscent of western sitcoms like Friends.
It is much more common to see content like this on OTT platforms like Netflix and Amazon prime, but none can match the charm of Jhankaar Beats.
