Dil Chahta Hai: How Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy Reinvented Bollywood Music

Dil Chahta Hai is a film that is considered a game-changer for Indian Cinema. The film introduced subtle, nuanced urban sensibilities in an industry that was filled with loud, overacted caricatures.
Just like the film, the soundtrack is just as iconic. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the music directors of Dil Chahta hai reinvented film music by adding new sounds to otherwise fairly standard Bollywood songs.
The dark almost Blade Runner-esque synths in Tanhaiyee, the use of the digeridoo, flute, and a slower but almost drum n bass sounding rhythm section in Jaane Kyun Log Pyaar Karte Hain, and the almost “digital shoegaze” appeal of Kaisi Hai Yeh Rut, which mixes layers of dreamy, atmospheric guitars with synthesized drums and electronic textures are just some examples of what made the soundtrack really stand out.
Its been 21 years since the film has released, since then there have been many films that have tried to experiment with new music, but none have come close to the magic of Dil Chahta hai.
