The Nooran Sisters: Redefining Punjabi Sufi Music

Sultana and Jyoti Nooran, famously known as The Nooran sisters are a devotional Sufi singing duo from Hoshiarpur, Punjab who have redefined the Punjabi Sufi Music scene.
Being a part of the Sham Chaurasia Gharana (Jalandhar, India), which was at the height of classical music during their time, the sisters were born into a family that has contributed their fair share of talented musicians to Indian music.
The sisters’ great-grandmother Bibi Nooran and grandfather Swarn Nooran were at the pinnacle of classical music in their time.
The Sisters first gained mainstream attention in 2012 when they appeared in the MTV Sound Trippin song "Tung Tung," which was later used as the soundtrack for the film "Singh is Bling" in 2015.
2015 also saw the release of The Nooran Sisters' debut album "Yaar Gariban Da," but their year was truly successful when they won their first major accolades for the song "Patakha Guddi" in the movie "Highway," including two Mirchi Music Awards, the Global Indian Music Academy Awards, and Screen Awards.
The sisters began their training under the guidance of their father, Ustad Gulshan Mir, at a very young age. Their talent was discovered by their father when they were playing at home and singing ‘Bulleh Shah Kalam’ they had heard from their grandmother.
They made their television debut on the Doordarshan Punjabi programme "Jashan Di Raat," and with each new song they released afterward, their popularity continued to grow.
The Nooran Sisters performed at the Dhaka International Folk Fest in 2016 and 2017, and also collaborated with MEMBA and EVAN GIIA for ‘For Aisha’ which was featured in the 2019 film ‘The Sky is Pink’ and Disney’s TV series "Ms. Marvel".
The duo went on to sing in films like Sultan, Mirzya, Dangal, and many others after reaching the top of the music charts with their first Bollywood song, "Patakha Guddi," which they named their favourite.
