Modernist: How Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan shaped Khayal

By the mid-20th century, Hindustani classical music stood at a crossroads. The court patronage that once sustained it had disappeared. Concert stages were replacing mehfils. Audiences had grown broader but less patient. The khayal form, built on slow unfolding, abstraction, and extended improvisation, was no longer insulated from these shifts.

Bade Ghulam Ali Khan carried it forward by refining its grammar. His training began in Kasur under his uncle Kale Khan and father Ali Baksh, both representatives of the Patiala-Kasur lineage. Later, he learned from figures like Ashiq Ali Khan of the Delhi Tanras tradition and Baba Sinde Khan of Gwalior.

Khan reduced the scale of exposition without reducing its depth. His alaps were compact but carefully shaped, delivering the identity of a raga with speed and clarity. The architecture of his performances was tighter, the movement more deliberate. Audiences unfamiliar with the long-drawn conventions of older khayal found in his style a more accessible, immediate form, without loss of rigor.

Instead of using bol-taans to dazzle, he used them to develop argument. His control over meend and andolan allowed for subtle variations within each phrase. Even in lighter forms like thumri, he upheld the same standard. Recordings such as “Aaye Na Balam” and “Yaad Piya Ki Aaye” are not remembered as diversions but as part of a unified approach.

In 1960, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan recorded for Mughal-e-Azam. The recordings retained the intensity of his concert work. There was no softening of the form for cinema. His performance in Prem Jogan Ban Ke remains one of the rare moments where a classical vocalist met the demands of film without distorting his musical priorities.

After a stroke left him partially paralysed, he continued to perform, often supported onstage by his son Munawar Ali Khan. Bade Ghulam Ali Khan gave modern khayal its shape; and till date, vocalists trace their approach, consciously or otherwise, to the structure he established.

It was this influence—his ability to balance tradition with transformation, to retain complexity while adjusting to modern contexts, that led many to call him the Tansen of the 20th Century.
