Raga Overdrive: How Project MishraM turns Indian Classical rhythm into modern groove

Indian classical music has long travelled internationally under familiar conditions—seated halls, attentive silence, reverence as the dominant mode of listening. What it rarely encounters is scale: towering speaker stacks, distortion-heavy line-ups, and crowds numbering in the hundreds of thousands. Project MishraM unsettles that expectation.

Formed in Bangalore, MishraM is a progressive Carnatic fusion band that places Indian
classical frameworks at the centre of an otherwise global, high-decibel sound. Their
compositions pull from modern progressive metal and djent, while absorbing funk, jazz, and electronic textures. What holds this hybrid together is not novelty but structure—ragas, syncopation, and rhythm systems informed by the mathematical logic of Indian classical music. That approach carried MishraM to one of the world’s largest heavy-music platforms. In September 2024, the band performed at the Louder Than Life festival in Louisville, Kentucky, drawing 150,000 attendees. Sharing the stage with acts such as Slayer, Slipknot, Korn, Gojira, Judas Priest, Evanescence, and over a hundred other international artists, MishraM did not appear as a cultural exception but as part of the festival’s core sonic vocabulary.

The moment was less about crossover than context. MishraM did not simplify Carnatic ideas for accessibility; instead, they trusted complexity to hold its ground at scale. Their music is built on density—polyrhythms, asymmetric grooves, extended forms—qualities that align naturally with progressive and metal traditions.

This philosophy was evident earlier in the band’s trajectory. Their 2021 debut album, Meso, received strong critical attention and was later long-listed in the Best Album of the Year and Best New Artist categories at the Grammy Awards. Since then, MishraM’s catalogue has crossed 500,000 streams across platforms.
Project MishraM’s significance lies in what they refuse to do. They do not position Carnatic music as heritage in need of updating. Instead, they present it as a living system —precise, adaptable, and fully capable of occupying the world’s loudest stages on its own terms.
