Raghu Rai : 18 December 1942 - 26 April 2026
For Raghu Rai, photography was never simply observation—it was a way of feeling his way into the world. In Picturing Time (2015), he wrote of wanting to capture “life’s longing for itself,” a phrase that comes closest to explaining the quiet intensity that runs through his work.
Music might have been his first calling. Rai has often spoken of an early desire to become a musician, drawn to rhythm and improvisation.
During his time as Photo Editor at India Today in the mid-1960s, Rai embarked on a project few photographers of his stature had pursued with such depth: to assemble a lasting visual archive of the masters who carried Hindustani and Carnatic music into the late twentieth century. The list of those he photographed is formidable—Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, M. S. Subbulakshmi, Bismillah Khan, Vilayat Khan, Kishori Amonkar, Bhimsen Joshi, Mallikarjun Mansur, Kumar Gandharva, Alla Rakha, Zakir Hussain, Hariprasad Chaurasia, S. Balachander.
He captured them in performance and in intimacy—on stage, at home, in preparation, mid-alaap, or in moments of laughter. He would sit before musicians with the patience of a disciple, waiting for the moment when the music lifted him elsewhere.
Alongside this ran another current—through power and catastrophe. His proximity to Indira Gandhi offered a rare view of political authority; his portraits of Mother Teresa remain among the most intimate ever made. In the aftermath of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, his images revealed the human cost with unflinching clarity.
In 1971, he was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours, a recognition seldom extended to a photographer.
For much of his career, he worked predominantly in black and white, resisting colour not out of nostalgia, but from a belief that form, light, and emotion carried greater clarity on their own.
Raghu Rai died in Delhi on 26 April 2026. He was 83.
He leaves behind the eye of a reporter, the patience of a witness, and the instinct of a rasik. His archive now stands as a decades-long observation of a nation and its inner tensions, guided by a deeply human eye.

I still can’t believe this is real, but I actually won the lottery jackpot! It feels like a dream come true. For years, I would occasionally play without expecting much, just hoping that one day luck would finally be on my side—and it finally happened when I came across a testimony on how Dr Benjamin the great spell caster had helped alot of people win, so I reached out to him, he told me what to do and I followed his instructions, after 48 hours he gave some numbers to play, I did played the numbers as instructed.
The moment I checked my numbers and realized they all matched, my heart started racing. I had to double-check multiple times because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Winning the Powerball jackpot of $107,000,000,00. This has completely changed my life. It’s given me financial freedom, peace of mind, and the opportunity to support my family and invest in my future. Here are his contact information.

I had almost lost hope of getting my wife back. Our marriage had gone through a very difficult period, and no matter how much I tried to communicate or repair the situation, things continued to feel distant between us. I was emotionally exhausted and unsure of what to do next. I came across Priest Alaska online and decided to reach out. From our first conversation, I felt listened too and treated with understanding. I was able to explain everything I had been going through, and I received guidance that gave me a renewed sense of hope. As I followed the guidance I received, I began to notice positive changes. Communication between my wife and me gradually improved, the tension between us became less intense, and we started reconnecting emotionally. Eventually, my wife reached out to me, and we had an honest conversation about our marriage and the possibility of starting over. Today, I am grateful that we have been able to reconnect and work toward rebuilding our relationship. What once felt like a situation with no way forward now feels like a new beginning for both of us. I promised God that I would share my testimony on this website. I had all the signs of STD Virus but I was not too sure as to which one. I did a lot of online research and scared myself straight for a whole week before going to see the nurse. She took one look at my genital part and first said that it could just be the anatomy of my body, then she said it looked like genital warts and that I May have herpes. I was devastated. She gave me some medicine for the herpes and some cream for the warts. I was also tested for every single STD including herpes. I went home and cried searching the web for all sorts of cures for herpes and awaiting my results. I saw a post whereby Dr. Kham cured Herpes and other diseases, I copied his contacts out and added him on WhatsApp. The next day my test result was ready and I confirmed Herpes positive. I told Dr. Kham about my health problems and he assured me of a cure. He prepared his herbal medicine and sent it to me. I took it for 14 days (2 weeks). Before the completion of the 14 days in which I completed the dose, The Blisters and Warts that were on my body were cleared. I went back for a check-up and I was told I’m free from the virus. After months of heartbreak and believing my marriage was over, I never imagined my partner and I would ever be together again. I had almost lost hope until I found Father Alaska online. Although initially skeptical, I decided to contact him and explain everything that had happened between us. He listened attentively, without judgment, asked thoughtful questions about our relationship, and gave me clear spiritual guidance. I followed all his instructions with faith and patience. To my surprise, shortly after, my partner contacted me. We had a heartfelt conversation, he apologized for everything that had happened, and we decided to rebuild our marriage together. I know every situation is different, but this was my personal experience, and I am grateful for the support I received. If you would like to contact Father Alaska, here is his information:
