Early in the film, Carter shares a surprising anecdote involving Willie Nelson, one of his sons, and what Nelson famously referred to as “a big fat Austin torpedo.”
In reflecting on Nelson’s story about smoking marijuana on the White House roof in 1980, Carter had clarified that it wasn’t a staff member who joined Nelson but one of his sons. This playful revelation encapsulates Carter’s openness and connection to the music community—a relationship that played a pivotal role in his rise to the presidency and continued throughout his life.
Directed by Mary Wharton and produced by Chris Farrell, the documentary chronicles how Carter, a peanut farmer from Georgia, leveraged the power of music to inspire and unite. It features Carter reminiscing by a turntable with Bob Dylan’s Bringin’ It All Back Home queued up, crediting The Allman Brothers Band for their pivotal fundraising efforts during his campaign.
As president, Carter turned the White House into a vibrant cultural hub. Artists such as Charles Mingus, Loretta Lynn, Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, and Crosby, Stills, and Nash visited or performed there. His approach marked a dramatic shift from previous administrations, creating an atmosphere of openness and celebration of the arts.
Musicians admired Carter’s authenticity and saw him as a leader who shared their ideals. The documentary highlights rare footage of White House concerts, including jazz performances, country music nights, and Paul Simon’s set, as well as interviews with Carter, his son Chip, Nelson, Dylan, and others.
Chip Carter recalls growing up in a household filled with music and his father’s advanced stereo system, featuring a McIntosh amplifier and AR1 speakers.
Until his passing on December 29, 2024, Carter remained a lifelong music enthusiast. The documentary celebrates this aspect of his legacy, emphasizing his belief in music’s power to bring people together.
