Swar Samragyi: How the world keeps discovering Asha Bhosle
Asha Bhosle grew up in a Marathi household built around classical music, her father Deenanath Mangeshkar training his children in ragas. But something else reached her through the radio. She’d shut herself in a room and imitate Carmen Miranda, Elvis Presley and Sinatra. Her mother, hearing the strange pitches through the wall, once thought a spirit had entered.
That habit stopped being private when it saved a recording. Composer C. Ramchandra couldn’t get a passage right, she recalled, until she reached for Miranda’s phrasing instead of her own training, and the take worked. A Brazilian-born singer had rescued a Hindi film song.
For years, the industry filed that instinct under sultry or novelty, next to her sister’s classical purity. It took R.D. Burman to hear what was really there, building arrangements no one else in Hindi cinema attempted: congas against tabla, psychedelic guitar under a playback vocal, the rasping register of “Dum Maro Dum.” What got her dismissed as too Western became the sound of a decade.
Her performance of “Dil Cheez Kya Hai” in Umrao Jaan brought her a National Award. The Dadasaheb Phalke followed in 2000, the Padma Vibhushan in 2008. In 2011, Guinness recognised her for more than 11,000 recordings across more than 20 languages.
That range is why the world came looking for her. Boy George featured her on “Bow Down Mister” in 1991. The Kronos Quartet built an album around her and Burman’s catalogue, earning a Grammy nomination. The Black Eyed Peas sampled “Yeh Mera Dil Pyaar Ka Diwana” and “Aye Naujawan Hai Sab Kuchh Yahan” into “Don’t Phunk With My Heart.”
That journey reached 2026, when Gorillaz brought her voice onto The Mountain, on “The Shadowy Light,” one of her final recorded appearances before her passing that April.
She never treated the music she loved as something to admire from a distance. Miranda, Elvis, Sinatra, Boy George, Kronos and Gorillaz became part of a musical life that refused to stay in one category. She listened widely, borrowed fearlessly, and made everything she loved sound unmistakably her own.
