Manu Trivedi caught up with Gary Lawyer to chat about The Other Side of Dawn released recently on vinyl by Free School Street Records; a label Manu co-founded a few years ago - along with Aveek Chatterjee and Rajiv Pandey.
Gary reminisced about his career and its many highlights. He also recounted the making of this amazing album.
Lawyer’s career took off in an unexpected moment; urged by friends to sing during a show’s interval, he caught the attention of HMV EMI’s B.T. Ravi. A high-powered demo recorded in the US led to his debut This Cannot Wait with Zubin Balaporia, Ehsaan Noorani, and Karl Peters, followed by the jazz album High Standards with Louis Banks. Both successes set the stage for The Other Side of Dawn.
Determined to record in New York, Gary worked with producer Chris Bertolotti (Steve Miller Band), bassist Mike Stanzilis, guitarist Jeff K, and drummer Sean Pelton of the Saturday Night Live Orchestra. Gary brought his own lyrics and arrangements; the musicians expanded them into a lush, world-class production that he still calls one of the most thrilling creative experiences of his life.
Released as MTV entered India, the single “Nights on Fire” became a sensation, spawning four videos in top rotation. The album’s reach was so wide it was pirated across Asia - Gary once walked into a Dubai shop and saw bootlegs stacked from floor to ceiling. US offers followed, but family commitments and uncertainty led him to return to India, a decision he still calls bittersweet.
He went on to record Arrow in the Dust with the same New York team, the homegrown No Turning Back with Indus Creed’s Mahesh Tinaikar, and later Heaven’s Child, on which he played every instrument himself. Across all these, Gary has stayed true to Western music despite offers from Bollywood’s biggest names.
Even now, decades later, Gary’s shows draw not just longtime fans but a growing number of young listeners discovering his work for the first time. For Gary, it’s proof that authentic music transcends time - and that The Other Side of Dawn still resonates far beyond the era in which it was made.
