TRC visits Mohammad Ilyas (Kolkata)

What are your favourite genres of Music and your all-time favourite musician?
I like to listen to Classical Indian music and old Hindi songs. My favourite music director is Naushad Ali.
How and why did you get into record business?
It all started back in 1980. I have always had an inclination towards records and I used to listen to them on my record player as a child. Nobody in my family had any sort of interest in this but my passion for music drove me to start my own business and even after almost 30 years I am still doing what I love.
What types of records do you keep?
My personal collection consists of Classics like Gauhar Jaan, Janki bai, Badi Moibai, Abdul Kareem Khan. We keep old Bollywood records, Ghazals, and Classical Indian music in our stock.
Tell us a little about your clientele, and How have they changed over the years and Do you get young clients?
Lately, I have seen a lot of youngsters wanting to buy records for their record players. They like to collect old records and it’s nice to see that there are still a few people who share the same love for vinyl like me.
Have you felt the revival of Vinyl?
Back in the 80s, people wanted to listen to records and not just keep them as a collectable item so there were a lot of vinyl enthusiasts who bought records for the love and joy of music. It’s not exactly the same right now but I am excited about this revival. Vinyl is definitely here to stay.
