What are your favourite genres of Music and your all-time favourite musician?
Pink Floyd.
I started my business when I was about 20-22 and I have always been a fan. Believe it or not, today morning I played The Dark Side of the Moon on my system, loud.
I love Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Peter Frampton, Eric Clapton, and I have a huge collection of jazz and rock and blues.
How and why did you get into record business?
I never planned for this business. I am originally from Kerela. I was a science student and a dropout- BSc. second year. My father wanted me to be a doctor. I broke all my father’s dreams in college and got out of there and came here to join the Indian Air Force but that didn’t work out for me. So, I started working for 100 rs. at an electronic shop. That time Tseries had released cassettes and I had never seen one in my life. A box of cassettes cost about Rs. 130 and that’s how I got into this business. There was a small shop in blue moon complex, MG Road, where I started working. Later, I got a small place in the shop itself for my business, then half of the shop and then eventually I got the whole shop in 1978. My business started to grow more and more, I was dedicated and committed to the work. Now I feel comfortable here sitting in the shop and playing music.
What types of records do you keep?
I have a huge personal collection also beside the stock we keep. I have a lot of Indian classical music because when foreigners come they prefer to buy South Indian and Hindustani classical like Pt. Jasraj, Ravi Shankar, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Bhimsen Joshi. I have got an entire collection of Hindustani and South Indian classical music and all Old Hindi Collection.
We also keep Classic rock but now we are stocking up on Dance albums too which are difficult to get. I entertain all customers.
Tell us a little about your clientele, and How have they changed over the years and Do you get young clients?
I have entertained 3 generations in Bangalore. We have clients for Nursery rhymes to Western classical and everything in between. It’s a complete music shop! I have all variety of music and anybody who walks in won't get disappointed. I love to mingle with people and play music. Come to my shop and we can talk about Freddie Mercury, his music, his wife, how he was gay, etc. Anything and everything related to music!
Have you felt the revival of Vinyl?
People come to the shop only for vinyl. They like the old ones which were made before 1980. Usually, they don’t prefer digital vinyl. I travel to various parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra, and whenever I find a good vinyl collection I will buy it and keep it in the shop. I am not in a hurry to encash it because I can live for another 20 years comfortably in this shop, minimum. I started with vinyl records in those days and now we are back with vinyl.
