Vanguard: How Rebeca Omordia is giving African Pianism a global voice
Classical music’s repertoire is expanding. Alongside Beethoven, Chopin and Debussy, performers are increasingly turning to composers whose works have long existed outside the Western canon. Few have done more to drive that shift than British-Nigerian pianist Rebeca Omordia, whose performances, recordings and research have brought African Pianism to new audiences around the world.
Born in Romania to a Nigerian father and Romanian mother, Omordia trained at Trinity College of Music and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire before earning a Doctor of Music degree from the National University of Music Bucharest. Although she established her career performing the traditional classical repertoire, reconnecting with her Nigerian heritage inspired her to explore the works of African composers, many of whom had remained largely absent from mainstream recital programmes.
That journey led her to African Pianism, a term coined by Nigerian composer and musicologist Akin Euba. Rather than arranging African folk melodies for the piano, the concept describes an approach to composition that combines Western classical forms with African rhythmic structures, melodic ideas and performance traditions. The result is a distinct musical language that reflects both traditions while remaining rooted in the classical idiom.
Omordia has become one of the movement’s foremost champions through her African Pianism recording series for SOMM Recordings. Featuring works by composers including Ayo Bankole, Joshua Uzoigwe, Fred Onovwerosuoke and J. H. Kwabena Nketia, the series includes numerous world-premiere recordings and has introduced listeners to a repertoire rarely heard beyond specialist circles. In 2019, she also founded the African Concert Series in London, the first concert series dedicated exclusively to African classical music and now resident at Wigmore Hall.
As classical music continues to embrace a broader range of voices, Rebeca Omordia’s work is helping ensure that African Pianism is no longer viewed as a niche repertoire, but as a vibrant and evolving tradition within contemporary classical music.

Nothing is impossible if you truly believe you can achieve it. I have been trying to expand my wine business in my hometown, White Plains. For the past eight years, I had played the lottery in my spare time, but on one blessed day, I came across an article about Priest Alaska’s lottery-winning spell. I contacted Priest Alaska to see if it would work, and after agreeing to his terms and conditions for the work, he used his magical powers on my behalf; he provided the numbers I needed to play, and I followed his instructions. At the store, I discovered that I had won a $123 million jackpot. For a moment I felt uncertain, but I looked again and saw that it was real. My life has taken an extraordinary turn going from nothing to prosperity and I have come to realize that life has a spiritual dimension; with Priest Alaska’s spell, winning the lottery is truly possible. Priest Alaska’s contact details are as follows: email alaskaspellcaster44@gmail.com or his website https://dralaskaspellcaster.mystrikingly.com.
