·Braz Gonsalves was shaped first by Goa — by church halls, parish schools and the study of Western classical music. Long before he became a towering figure in Indian jazz, he was a young student learning scales in a coastal town steeped in music.
His earliest professional experience came through a circus orchestra, before he found his way into the smoky nightclub circuits of Bombay and Calcutta.
Gonsalves possessed uncommon versatility. He played tenor, alto and soprano saxophones — every instrument seemed to reveal a different side of him.
What audiences remembered most was his unpredictability — melodies dissolving effortlessly into daring improvisation. Reviewers described solos that twisted like serpents: delirious, ecstatic, almost dangerous.
He became one of India’s finest reed players, leading celebrated residencies at Bombay’s Astoria Hotel and later collaborating with pianist Louis Banks and vocalist Pam Crain. Together, they created the now-legendary “Raga Rock”, blending jazz improvisation with Indian ragas, funk and soul.
A fall in Munich during the early 1980s led Braz away from jazz and deeper into gospel and devotional music, embracing a sound that felt more personal and introspective.
By this time, he had already earned a place among India’s most celebrated musicians. Chosen by the Government of India as a cultural ambassador for jazz, Braz Gonsalves carried his music across festivals around the world, sharing stages with legends such as Charlie Byrd, Eddie Daniels and Sadao Watanabe. In 2013, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by then Chief Minister Digambar Kamat for taking Goan music and culture far beyond its shores.
With time, Braz returned to the music that had first defined him — now enriched by everything he had lived and played through in the years between.
