Nischay Parekh and Jivraj Singh, better known by their surnames Parekh and Singh ( @parekhandsingh )the dream-pop duo from the City of Joy – Kolkata, package their music with a distinctive visual narrative style that's hard to resist.
The pair’s debut album ‘Ocean’ (2013) created waves, while their singles were loved by anyone who tuned in. Their music features none of the stereotypical sitars and tablas that dominate India’s music scene, but what you see on stage is two young musicians’ namely guitarist, vocalist and synth-player Parekh and percussionist Singh who produce music that would immediately magnetise you, distinctly un-Indian, but catchy enough to make you sway.
Adopting a name stemming from the days when we heard bands like Simon and Garfunkel and Hall and Oates, the duo infacat acknowledges these artists as their heroes. The band was actually known as Zap before adopting the name Parekh and Singh.
The duo love dabbling the synthesizer and computers. Technology has allowed them to sound like a full band when in reality it's just the two of them.
In October 2016 the band re-released their album ‘Ocean’ on Peacefrog, a Brit Indie label, and a year later released their first music video, the iconic and much loved and viewed I Love You Baby, I Love You Doll. The album produced two singles namely, Philosophize and Ghost. Almost two years later they released their second album ‘Science City’ named after an amusement park in their native Kolkata. The album produced three singles Hello, Summer Skin and Crystalline. TRC has three vinyl LPs of Parekh and Singh.
A question many people might want answers for, is the reason behind the brightly colored tailored suits they wear on stage at live performances. Nischay states that this fashion statement rose from the idea of a uniform; “A suit is something associated with work. The colors remind us that it's also a uniform for playfulness and fun, balance and contrast”.
