Jigsaw: How The Avalanches assembled 'Since I Left You' from 3500 old records
The story of Since I Left You begins in Melbourne’s late-90s record rooms, where The Avalanches were a loose collective of teenage DJs turning second-hand vinyl into raw material for experimentation.
Robbie Chater, Tony Di Blasi and Darren Seltmann were shaped by hip-hop sampling and club culture, where turntables worked as instruments rather than playback devices. This was also the era when vinyl digging became a method of discovery, where discarded records were treated as unfinished musical language rather than nostalgia.
The Avalanches drew influence from Public Enemy’s dense sample layering and The Dust Brothers’ production style, but expanded this into long-form collage rather than isolated references. Since I Left You, released in 2000 arrived as their debut album, built from an estimated 3,500 vinyl samples processed through Akai hardware samplers and early sequencing systems.
Robbie Chater said, “We were trying to build something that felt like a journey, not a collection of songs,” describing the album’s central idea. Key fragments include “The Canyon of My Dreams” by The Mystic Moods Orchestra and “Everyday” by The Main Attraction, both reshaped into texture rather than recognisable samples.
The album arrived as sampling laws were tightening in late 1990s, after legal cases in the US made clearance expensive and restrictive for producers. That shift made large-scale sample-based projects increasingly difficult, placing Since I Left You in a rare position at the moment of its release. The album later won ARIA Awards for Breakthrough Artist and Best Dance Release, and was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize in the UK.
Its legacy lies in how it reframed sampling as reconstruction rather than borrowing, where fragments lose identity inside a continuous sound world. Debates around sampling often focus on legality or originality, but Since I Left You pushes the idea further. Every listen reveals new connections between vinyl fragments and production culture, making discovery part of the experience across generations.

I still can’t believe this is real, but I actually won the lottery jackpot! It feels like a dream come true. For years, I would occasionally play without expecting much, just hoping that one day luck would finally be on my side—and it finally happened when I came across a testimony on how Dr Benjamin the great spell caster had helped alot of people win, so I reached out to him, he told me what to do and I followed his instructions, after 48 hours he gave some numbers to play, I did played the numbers as instructed.
The moment I checked my numbers and realized they all matched, my heart started racing. I had to double-check multiple times because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Winning the Powerball jackpot of $107,000,000,00. This has completely changed my life. It’s given me financial freedom, peace of mind, and the opportunity to support my family and invest in my future. Here are his contact information.

I had almost lost hope of getting my wife back. Our marriage had gone through a very difficult period, and no matter how much I tried to communicate or repair the situation, things continued to feel distant between us. I was emotionally exhausted and unsure of what to do next. I came across Priest Alaska online and decided to reach out. From our first conversation, I felt listened too and treated with understanding. I was able to explain everything I had been going through, and I received guidance that gave me a renewed sense of hope. As I followed the guidance I received, I began to notice positive changes. Communication between my wife and me gradually improved, the tension between us became less intense, and we started reconnecting emotionally. Eventually, my wife reached out to me, and we had an honest conversation about our marriage and the possibility of starting over. Today, I am grateful that we have been able to reconnect and work toward rebuilding our relationship. What once felt like a situation with no way forward now feels like a new beginning for both of us. If you are experiencing difficulties in your marriage or relationship, seeking appropriate guidance and support may help you approach the situation with greater clarity and hope.
