Jigsaw: How The Avalanches assembled 'Since I Left You' from 3500 old records
The story of Since I Left You begins in Melbourne’s late-90s record rooms, where The Avalanches were a loose collective of teenage DJs turning second-hand vinyl into raw material for experimentation.
Robbie Chater, Tony Di Blasi and Darren Seltmann were shaped by hip-hop sampling and club culture, where turntables worked as instruments rather than playback devices. This was also the era when vinyl digging became a method of discovery, where discarded records were treated as unfinished musical language rather than nostalgia.
The Avalanches drew influence from Public Enemy’s dense sample layering and The Dust Brothers’ production style, but expanded this into long-form collage rather than isolated references. Since I Left You, released in 2000 arrived as their debut album, built from an estimated 3,500 vinyl samples processed through Akai hardware samplers and early sequencing systems.
Robbie Chater said, “We were trying to build something that felt like a journey, not a collection of songs,” describing the album’s central idea. Key fragments include “The Canyon of My Dreams” by The Mystic Moods Orchestra and “Everyday” by The Main Attraction, both reshaped into texture rather than recognisable samples.
The album arrived as sampling laws were tightening in late 1990s, after legal cases in the US made clearance expensive and restrictive for producers. That shift made large-scale sample-based projects increasingly difficult, placing Since I Left You in a rare position at the moment of its release. The album later won ARIA Awards for Breakthrough Artist and Best Dance Release, and was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize in the UK.
Its legacy lies in how it reframed sampling as reconstruction rather than borrowing, where fragments lose identity inside a continuous sound world. Debates around sampling often focus on legality or originality, but Since I Left You pushes the idea further. Every listen reveals new connections between vinyl fragments and production culture, making discovery part of the experience across generations.

I promised God that I would share my testimony on this website. I had all the signs of STD Virus but I was not too sure as to which one. I did a lot of online research and scared myself straight for a whole week before going to see the nurse. She took one look at my genital part and first said that it could just be the anatomy of my body, then she said it looked like genital warts and that I May have herpes. I was devastated. She gave me some medicine for the herpes and some cream for the warts. I was also tested for every single STD including herpes. I went home and cried searching the web for all sorts of cures for herpes and awaiting my results. I saw a post whereby Dr. Kham cured Herpes and other diseases, I copied his contacts out and added him on WhatsApp. The next day my test result was ready and I confirmed Herpes positive. I told Dr. Kham about my health problems and he assured me of a cure. He prepared his herbal medicine and sent it to me. I took it for 14 days (2 weeks). Before the completion of the 14 days in which I completed the dose, The Blisters and Warts that were on my body were cleared. I went back for a check-up and I was told I’m free from the virus. After months of heartbreak and believing my marriage was over, I never imagined my partner and I would ever be together again. I had almost lost hope until I found Father Alaska online. Although initially skeptical, I decided to contact him and explain everything that had happened between us. He listened attentively, without judgment, asked thoughtful questions about our relationship, and gave me clear spiritual guidance. I followed all his instructions with faith and patience. To my surprise, shortly after, my partner contacted me. We had a heartfelt conversation, he apologized for everything that had happened, and we decided to rebuild our marriage together. I know every situation is different, but this was my personal experience, and I am grateful for the support I received. If you would like to contact Father Alaska, here is his information:
