Rang Bhavan: The Venue That Shaped The Music Scene In India

Mumbai is the entertainment capital of India. The city has contributed immensely to the rich and vibrant musical history of India while also being responsible for some of the biggest international concerts held in India.
Rang Bhavan has contributed to a number of major events in Indian music. It was an exciting time for world music at the time, with the very first Jazz Yatra in 1978 featuring Sonny Rollins, Sadao Watanabe, and Clark Terry, as well as the debut performances by major rock bands from the era like The Police, Jethro Tull, and Uriah Heep.
Rang Bhavans not only played a pivotal role in laying down the blueprint for the rock and metal scene of India as it was the venue for India's biggest rock festival "Independence Rock" for almost 30 years but also contributed immensely to popularizing some of the best musicians to have worked in Bollywood like AR. Rahman, Lucky Ali and KK.
For countless musicians, Rang Bhavan was the stage of their dreams. Performing on the same stage where legends like Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Shaggy, L. Subramanium, Zakir Hussain, Ustad Rais Khan once performed was nothing less than an honour.
Unfortunately, noise complaints from nearby areas forced the venue to close in the 2000s. Even though it is no longer around today, its echoes can still be heard in India’s Thriving music scene. Rang Bhavan is an important part of the country’s musical heritage that should always be remembered.
