Star Maker: How Kishore Kumar Built The Rajesh Kahnna Phenomenon

In the Hindi cinema of the early 1970s, stardom belonged to the face. The bigger the star on the poster, the bigger the crowd. And yet, a singer who was barely seen onscreen became the emotional centre of the movies. That voice was Kishore Kumar, and the actor who soared highest with it was Rajesh Khanna.

While they had collaborated before, notably in Khamoshi, their legendary partnership was cemented with Aradhana in 1969. Between 1969 and 1974, Khanna delivered hit after hit, reaching a level of fame unseen before. In nearly all those films, it was Kishore’s voice—romantic, melancholic, and mischievous—that carried the emotion.

Across 92 films, Kishore sang over 245 songs for Khanna. When Aradhana (1969) was released, Kishore had been absent from the mainstream, edged out by Mohd. Rafi. But music director S.D. Burman insisted on bringing Kishore back.

Soon after, “Mere Sapno Ki Rani” became a national obsession. Khanna, a relatively new face, appeared to the country as someone who sounded like their everyman fantasy. Kishore’s teasing tone, his whistle, and the playfulness he slipped into each line created a persona for Khanna that was both accessible and aspirational.

In film after film—Amar Prem, Kati Patang, Haathi Mere Saathi—Kishore became the soul of Rajesh Khanna. Khanna himself admitted this synergy, recognizing that Kishore’s voice gave his on-screen charm a depth that resonated with millions. For the lovelorn boy in “Yeh Shaam Mastani,” Kishore’s effortless slide from a low whisper to a heartfelt plea perfectly captured the subtle nervousness and grand passion of a young man in love.

Even as new stars like Amitabh Bachchan emerged, Kishore remained the most in-demand male voice. He adjusted with ease, lending brooding depth to Bachchan (“Rimjhim Gire Saawan”) and youthful verve to Rishi Kapoor (“Om Shanti Om” from Karz).

Woh Shaam Kuch Ajeeb Thi
Khamoshi (1969)

Before the world called him Rajesh Khanna’s voice, Kishore sang this haunting ballad of silence and longing. Composed by Hemant Kumar and written by Gulzar, it’s Kishore at his most restrained, aching pauses, half-sung regrets. Khanna sits quietly at the piano, letting the voice do the acting. Released just before Aradhana, this was the quiet prelude to a partnership that would change everything.

Mere Sapno Ki Rani
Aradhana (1969)

Originally, Aradhana was to feature Mohammed Rafi, but due to Rafi’s tour, S.D. Burman turned to Kishore Kumar—sparking his comeback as a playback star. Directed as an open-jeep chase in the Darjeeling hills, the song had Rajesh Khanna pursuing Sharmila Tagore’s train amidst iconic scenery. Tagore’s footage was later reshot in Mumbai on a studio set to match the location shots perfectly. Khanna later remarked that listening to Kishore’s voice felt like “it was Rajesh Khanna singing.”

Roop Tera Mastana
Aradhana (1969)

Shot in one daring long take—virtually unheard-of at the time—this song unfolds inside a cabin during a thunderstorm. Khanna and Tagore circle a fireplace in charged silence, captured in a camera-fixed, intimate choreography. S.D. Burman’s direction to arrange vocals that emphasized pure romance led to Kishore’s low, hushed delivery and the sultry sonic interplay of saxophone and accordion by stalwarts like Manohari Singh and Kersi Lord. This performance earned Kishore a Filmfare Award, validating his new identity as Khanna’s voice and sealing both their legacies.

Jeevan Se Bhari Teri Aankhen
Safar (1970)

This wasn’t just a song; it was a farewell note. Khanna plays a terminally ill doctor. Kishore tempers his tone—half-affection, half-acceptance. Salil Chowdhury’s composition gives Kishore room to haunt the space. The chemistry between voice and face isn’t romantic—it’s tragic, philosophical. The song’s popularity was proof that India didn’t always need its heroes to win.

Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai
Kati Patang (1970)

This is Kishore channeling the defeated lover. There’s bitterness in his voice, but no aggression. He makes heartbreak feel like a shared secret. Rajesh Khanna, drunk and destroyed in the song, doesn’t just act—he dissolves. Kishore provides the alcohol.

Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana
Andaz (1971)

A buoyant song about life’s unpredictability, composed by Shankar–Jaikishan with lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri—this chartbuster topped Binaca Geetmala in 1971. Though one version featured Mohammad Rafi with Shammi Kapoor and Hema Malini, Kishore’s rendition for Rajesh Khanna injected a fresh spontaneity—his laughter, whistles, and carefree phrasing embodying a carefree optimism, even as his character’s fate hinted at fragility.

Shakti Samanta’s vision, R.D. Burman’s tune, Anand Bakshi’s poetry—all led by Kishore’s internalised agony. Khanna, as a lonely man drinking his way through society’s hypocrisies, finds his soul in Kishore’s understated phrasing. There’s a moment where the voice almost breaks—but doesn’t. That tension defined their mature phase.

Amar Prem (1972)

A turning point in Amar Prem, “Yeh Kya Hua” unfolds as Rajesh Khanna’s silent heartbreak is brought to life by Kishore Kumar’s melancholic questioning. R.D. Burman’s haunting score flows with introspection over Anand Bakshi’s reflective lyrics. Derived subtly from earlier Bengali tunes yet wholly reinvented, Kishore’s voice becomes the movie’s conscience—turning stillness into something deeply emotionally profound.

Ajanabee (1974)
