Virtuoso: Tracing the legacy of the artist who stood at the heart of India's golden jazz years
Braz Gonsalves was shaped first by Goa — by church halls, parish schools and the study of Western classical music. Long before he became a towering figure in Indian jazz, he was a young student learning scales in a coastal town steeped in music.
His earliest professional experience came through a circus orchestra, before he found his way into the smoky nightclub circuits of Bombay and Calcutta.
Gonsalves possessed uncommon versatility. He played tenor, alto and soprano saxophones — every instrument seemed to reveal a different side of him.
What audiences remembered most was his unpredictability — melodies dissolving effortlessly into daring improvisation. Reviewers described solos that twisted like serpents: delirious, ecstatic, almost dangerous.
He became one of India’s finest reed players, leading celebrated residencies at Bombay’s Astoria Hotel and later collaborating with pianist Louis Banks and vocalist Pam Crain. Together, they created the now-legendary “Raga Rock”, blending jazz improvisation with Indian ragas, funk and soul.
A fall in Munich during the early 1980s led Braz away from jazz and deeper into gospel and devotional music, embracing a sound that felt more personal and introspective.
By this time, he had already earned a place among India’s most celebrated musicians. Chosen by the Government of India as a cultural ambassador for jazz, Braz Gonsalves carried his music across festivals around the world, sharing stages with legends such as Charlie Byrd, Eddie Daniels and Sadao Watanabe. In 2013, he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by then Chief Minister Digambar Kamat for taking Goan music and culture far beyond its shores.
With time, Braz returned to the music that had first defined him — now enriched by everything he had lived and played through in the years between.
An unforgettable evening with The Braz Gonsalves Collective awaits at the inaugural of The Revolver Club, Goa. Join us on the 24th of May, 7 PM onwards. Limited edition copies of ‘Echoes From The Past (The Rarities)’ will be available for purchase at the show, with a chance to have it signed by Braz Gonsalves.

Today, I decided to speak out publicly online to share the story of my happiness and tell how I found hope again after a very difficult period in my life. Two years ago, my wonderful relationship with my husband fell apart one of the most painful experiences I have ever had to endure. For a long time, I tried various ways to save our relationship, but unfortunately, my efforts were unsuccessful. I felt disheartened and wondered if there was any hope at all of winning my relationship back. Everything changed when I came across a testimonial online about Priest Alaska. The positive experiences described there encouraged me to reach out and seek his advice. I sent him an email, and after communicating with him, I regained hope. I am grateful that I took that step. Today, I am happier and look toward my relationship and the future with confidence. My experience has taught me that one should not give up hope, even when things seem impossible. If you, too, are facing relationship problems and would like to learn more about Priest Alaska, you can contact him at alaskaspellcaster44@gmail.com or visit his website: https://dralaskaspellcaster.mystrikingly.com.

I have been a crab fisherman for 40 years. I started working at a local fish plant a few years ago. I love playing lotto bets, so I buy lotto tickets often but find it difficult to win. I read about Lord Bubuza’s lottery spells on the internet, so I contacted him for help to win Lotto 649. He told me that he would need to cast a lotto spell so that he can reveal the lotto numbers I will choose. I was sceptical, but my wife Nancy told me to give it a try. I provided his requirements to cast the lotto spells, and he gave me the numbers. I bought a Lotto 649 ticket and played as Lord Bubuza instructed, to my surprise it was a big win. I won $64,000,000. My partner Nancy and I travelled to the Atlantic Lottery in Moncton to confirm the win and collect the prize. I will retire from my crab fishing with this win and continue to recommend lord Bubuza. Join me and appreciate Lord Bubuza for his help via Email: lordbubuzamiraclework@hotmail.com or WhatsApp: +1 (365) 808 5313 …

Hello, I want to share my testimony with all of you. I have daily 9 to 5 jobs but while I work, I try my luck at playing instant Lotto. On this particular day, I decided to seek help online regarding tips for winning the lottery and I saw many individuals testifying about Meduza spells. I reached out to him and informed him that I needed help to win the lottery and he clarified the process to me stating that after he casts the spell, it will take 48 hours for him to provide me the winning numbers which I accepted. I followed all his instructions and he provided me with the numbers to enter the Lottery. After the draw the following morning I received a notification on the Lottery app on my phone indicating that I was the lucky winner of $273 million on the New Jersey Lottery and I’m here to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Meduza.
