It always makes us feel good when we see Indians making a name for themselves globally, but did you know these global icons share their roots as us?
Let us know what you think about it and who we missed out on!

1. Freddie Mercury

Perhaps the most famous of them all, the legendary lead singer of the band "Queen" was born in Parsi-Indian family parents in Tanzania. Originally named Farrokh Bulsara, Freddie spent his early years in Valsad, Gujrat. However, he had to travel again, as his family moved to the United Kingdom following the Tanzanian revolution in 1974. A musical prodigy from the very young age, Freddie Mercury's talents made him home at UK, as his voice inspired generations worldwide.

2. Nicki Minaj

One of the rap heavyweights, Nicki Minaj's appreciation for Indian culture goes beyond Bollywood and Indian cuisine. In 2019, Nicki Minaj admitted that she has Indian roots. Her father, Robert Maraj is of Indo-Trinidadian origin, perhaps it should be of no surprise to see Nicki running several charity programs in India, sponsoring for clean water in several villages.

3.XXXTentacion

Not a lot of people know this but later rapper XXXTentacion confirmed on his Tumblr post that he is of Indian descent. Born Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy, XXXTentacion was at peak of his popularity in 2017 with his alternative brand of hiphop, before he was shot dead in 2018.

4. Charli XCX

When Charli was recording her second studio album "Sucker" in 2013, she admitted in an interview that she wanted to go to India and record her album there. That's not the only time you'll see Charli's name being associated with India. As it turns out, Charli's mother Shameera was a nurse raised in a Gujrati family before moving to United Kingdom.

5. KSHMR

Born Niles Hollowell-Dhar, DJ KSHMR or simply KSHMR got his name from the state of Kashmir, as his father, a Kashmiri pandit migrated to America. Looking back it, it is not hard to find where his amazing musical inspirations come from, as he tries to blend hindustani music with Electro house.

It caused a stir in the media when it was revealed that Norah Jones' biological father was the legendary Pandit Ravi Shankar. Born Geethali Norah Jones Shankar, Norah was quite hesitant to discuss her relationship with her father. However, as things improved between them, the fans and the media seemed happy to adore such a legendary father-daughter duo making their mark in the music industry.

If you are a true 00s baby, you will remember how huge "Down" was back then! Well, you have to credit Kamaljit Singh Jhooti for that.
