Allwyn - A Milestone In The History of Indian Horology

Allwyn Watch

In 1942 the Nizam of Hyderabad established Allwyn Metal works along with M/s Allwyn and company. They made the metal ballot boxes for the first Indian election. Soon the company was taken over by the Hyderabad state and they began manufacturing consumer durables, scooters and even parts for locomotive trains.

In 1982 they started manufacturing watches with Seiko from Japan at that time HMT was the only dominant player in the market and most Swiss brands had exited because of the government’s nationalist policies.

Allwyn's pieces were refined compared to the HMTs and had beautiful multilayered construction along with a robust Seiko movement that was far superior to any other movements in the Indian market. The dial was topped with the iconic Charminar logo that was to be their hallmark.

Trivia time: In the year 1989 the Allwyn watch company hired an unknown singer at that time known as Dileep to do a jingle for their new watch range targeting the youth! The same singer went on to be the cult favorite A. R. Rahman.

Today Allwyn Watches is no more. However, we have a rare piece of Indian horological history available on our site from the Allwyn brand. This watch was sourced brand new in a never-worn condition! A rare opportunity to buy a piece of Indian horological history at a very reasonable price.
